Tea With Jane Austen

Tea figures prominently in Austen’s life and work. At the center of almost every social situation in her novels one finds tea. In Emma, does Miss Bates drink coffee? Of course not: “No coffee, I thank you, for me—never take coffee.—A little tea if you please.” In Pride and Prejudice, what is one of the supreme honors Mr. Collins can envision Lady Catherine bestowing on Elizabeth Bennet and her friends? Why, drinking tea with her, naturally. In this talk, Kim Wilson explores the history of British tea and its importance to Jane Austen and to the characters in her novels. Kim will share how to serve tea in the Regency manner and what Regency-era goodies to serve with it.

Kim Wilson is an award-winning author and speaker specializing in Jane Austen, English history, food history, and garden history. She has written several popular books, including Tea with Jane Austen, In the Garden with Jane Austen, and At Home with Jane Austen. Known for her entertaining and informative presentations, Kim has been a traveling lecturer for the Jane Austen Society of North America and a featured lecturer and keynote speaker for organizations such as the Royal Oak Foundation (the American partner of the National Trust of England, Wales and Northern Ireland), Road Scholar, the Chawton House Garden Festival, and the Jane Austen Summer Program.

Kim is currently having fun testing historical party recipes—think generous amounts of butter, sugar, and cream—for her upcoming books, Entertaining Mr. Darcy and Celebrating Jane Austen’s Birthday, part of the Celebrating the Year with Jane Austen series. In addition, she is preparing to launch RosyPast.com, a new website offering historical lifestyle books, articles, and tutorials on historical cooking and crafting.
